Anti-Spam
Whats this all about?
Like most internet users I get quite large volumes of spam email. This varies from random nonsense to quite weighty picture-filled junk.
With most I cannot do anything about apart from file spam reports and the like, however on occasion though the spammers quite helpfully tell me their names and addresses in the UK. This is where I (and you) can take some action and stop spammers.
In the UK you have the basic right as an individual to:
- Not to have my personal email addressed processed or stored without consent.
- Not to receive marketing email without explicit consent unless it is related to an existing relationship with the company and I have not withdrawn consent.
There is a great resource on ScotchSpam.org.uk where explainations of the legal process and example emails are open to all.
I take the approach that my spam complaints will educate companies that they cannot just spam people, not only does it cost money (I roam alot and a 100Kb email could cost me a few quid!) , peoples time in cleaning mailboxes and setting up filters but it is illegal!
If the spam complaint is taken seriously and addressed promptly I often suggest a token donation to a charity of my choice, however if things are ignored court is the only action.
I will document in detail examples on this page in the future. Current settlements are in the £xxx region , and undertakings have been recieved from several UK firms.
